Volunteer Spotlight

One of the items that SCORE's volunteers identified as an area for improvement across SCORE was recognition. In order to help foster more recognition of SCORE's volunteers, teams and chapters, we are implementing a new "SCORE Volunteer Spotlight" program. We will be highlighting volunteers and chapters to showcase our service and quality.

Meet Linda Ranslow
Chapter Secretary for SCORE Rochester

Linda Ranslow is a dedicated 4-year SCORE volunteer who supports the Rochester, New York chapter of SCORE as the Chapter Secretary. Even though she has never mentored a client, her willingness to learn new skills and her ability to keep up with new technology have allowed her to have a meaningful volunteer experience.

"There are many roles and opportunities in each chapter, and it takes a lot of effort from many people to make a chapter successful."

HOW DID YOU LEARN ABOUT SCORE, AND WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO GET INVOLVED?

"After 29 years, I left my career with Xerox in 2004 to spend more time with my family continuing to raise two daughters. I lost my husband in 2007 to inoperable brain cancer, and by the end of 2008, I was searching for a meaningful volunteer opportunity to fill a void in my life. I came across a volunteer matching site online that indicated that my local SCORE chapter was looking for a chapter secretary. I thought it was a good match (and so did they). I started in January 2009 as the Rochester Chapter Secretary."

HOW ARE YOU INVOLVED AS A VOLUNTEER WITH SCORE?
"Initially, my role was to take notes at the monthly member and board meetings. Within months, I also became the editor of the chapter online newsletter, which we created and distributed through Constant Contact (CC). In 2010, seeing the advantages that CC had for event planning, I convinced the chapter to try it for their annual holiday luncheon. We then transitioned our workshop registration into CC, and shortly after that, we added workshop fees through PayPal. Utilizing the capabilities of CC has streamlined our workshop process and made it much more efficient."

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY THE MOST ABOUT VOLUNTEERING WITH SCORE?
"The best part of volunteering with SCORE is the interaction with everyone I work with. I feel that my skills and abilities are very much appreciated and that my contributions help to make the chapter more efficient and productive."

ANY ADVICE FOR SCORE VOLUNTEERS?
"Find your niche in the chapter, and become very active in the ongoing chapter activities. There are many roles and opportunities in each chapter, and it takes a lot of effort from many people to make a chapter successful. There is a good fit for anyone who is willing to help by putting forth their efforts in a positive way to ultimately help our small business clients. As a member of SCORE you have a critical role: your chapter won't be successful unless you're willing to get involved. I hope you will. We need everyone's help!"

Linda shares her volunteer efforts with the Rochester Ronald McDonald House, where she leads fundraising efforts. In addition, she is a deacon in her church and a mother to her two daughters: Allison (a junior at Penn State) and Madison (a sophomore in high school).
